What is the South African Pharmacy Council and why is it important?
The South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) is the regulatory body that oversees the pharmacy profession in South Africa. It was established in terms of the Pharmacy Act, 1974 (Act 53 of 1974) to protect, promote and maintain the health, safety and wellbeing of patients and the public by ensuring accessible quality pharmaceutical service for all South Africans.
The SAPC has various functions and responsibilities, such as:
- Registering pharmacists, pharmacy support personnel and pharmacy premises
- Setting and enforcing standards of pharmacy education, training and practice
- Conducting inspections and audits of pharmacy facilities and services
- Investigating and resolving complaints and disciplinary matters
- Developing and implementing policies and guidelines for the pharmacy profession
- Promoting professional development and continuing education for pharmacy practitioners
- Advising the Minister of Health and other stakeholders on matters relating to pharmacy
The SAPC consists of 25 members, who are elected or appointed for a term of five years. The members represent different sectors and categories of the pharmacy profession, as well as the public interest. The current members of the SAPC were elected or appointed in 2019 and will serve until 2024.
Locations
SAPC operates from two offices in Pretoria: the Arcadia office and the Hatfield office. The Arcadia office houses the executive management, the registration, finance, human resources, legal and communication departments, as well as the office of the Registrar. The Hatfield office accommodates the education, practice, quality assurance, inspection and enforcement departments.
Communication
The Council with its stakeholders through various channels, such as its website, newsletters, bulletins, social media, webinars, workshops and conferences. The SAPC also publishes an annual report, a strategic plan and a performance plan to inform the public of its activities and achievements.
